Biography

Dr. Aksam Merched received his Ph.D. in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Nancy, France in 1998 doing research in human molecular genetics in cerebro- and cardiovascular diseases. He spent 5 years as a Postdoc at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston studying molecular and cellular aspects and inflammation in cardiovascular diseases. In 2003, he was appointed to the faculty at the Instructor level, and in 2004, he was promoted to Assistant Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor. Dr. Merched has authored and co-authored more than 75 publications, invited talks, and conference proceedings.

Research Interest

His research interests have focused on the basic research of cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis. A large part of Dr. Merched’s current research effort consist of understanding the contribution of inflammation to the buildup of atherosclerotic lesions and defining, at the molecular level, novel mechanisms of atherogenesis. The objective of this research is to identify pharmaceutical targets and to design more efficacious interventions.
