Biography

Dr. Aleksandra Pikula is Assistant Professor of Neurology with expertise in Vascular Neurology at Boston University School of Medicine and an Investigator at the Framingham Heart Study.
After receiving a medical degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Belgrade, Dr. Pikula completed a two-year residency in general medicine followed by a research position at the SHSC in Toronto. Subsequently, she completed a year of internship in medicine at the QHC- Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC, residency in neurology at BUSM and two-year combined clinical and research fellowship training in vascular neurology at BUSM and at the Framingham Heart Study, when she started a program towards MSc at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Pikulas clinical interests are focused on comprehensive evaluation and management of stroke in young population. Her major research interest is stroke prevention and discovery of novel biomarkers and risk factors for clinical and subclinical vascular brain disease. Dr. Pikula has received National Clinical Research Award from AHA to study the role of neurotrophic factors in cerebrovascular disease. She has presented at national and international meetings, authored peer-reviewed publications and is a reviewer for recognized journals and professional web-forums.

Research Interest

A major focus of her research interest is stroke prevention, genetics of stroke and discovery of novel biomarkers and risk factors for clinical and subclinical vascular brain disease; and stroke in young population.
