Anil.D kulkarni completed his graduation B.Sc. (Chemistry-Physics) in 1963, M.Sc. (Biochemistry-Immunology) (Research), 1970 at Bombay University. He completed his Post-graduation Ph.D. (Immunology) at Faculty of Medicine, 1988, The Queen′s University of Belfast, UK. Medical School Representative on the Diversity Advisory Board, UTHSCH, 2006-2009. Member, Strategic Planning Committee for International Affairs of UTHSC, Houston. Global Health Concentration Faculty at the UT Medical School since 2010. He is the Coordinator of Academic International Exchange Programs for students, fellows and residents in Japan, Brasil, New Zealand, Sikkim and UK.

Research Interest

The focus of my research is role of nutritional nucleotides in immunomodulation. My current project studies dietary nucleotide supplementation and its immunomodulatory application in microgravity. These studies involve in vivo and in vitro models of simulated microgravity namely the anti-orthostatic tail suspension of mice and in vitro studies using NASA developed Bioreactor where lymphocytes are cultured under constant free fall state. We will examine the mechanisms involved in nucleotide supplementation as a countermeasure to obviate immune dysfunction in microgravity by looking at the molecular level for expression of various cytokines and intracellular messages. We are also interested in clinical applications of nucleotide preparations and currently developing a protocol for human studies. A tutorial in my laboratory would provide opportunities in various immunological methodology in general and especially in relation to above referred projects. You would also learn the importance and relevance of translational nutritional immunology in the medical field. The ultimate goal is to design and develop a nutritional supplement and therapy that will have impact on future human health on Earth and beyond in space.
