Dr. Ashok Mulchandani is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of California and the Editor-in-Chief of the Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology journal. He is elected Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He has received several honors and awards including Research Initiation award from the national Science Foundation and Faculty Participation Award from the Department of Energy. He has delivered several Plenary and Keynote lectures Prof. Mulchandani has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal publications, 10 book chapters, 12 conference proceedings articles and over 200 conference abstracts. He has co-edited four textbooks that include very popular Enzyme and Microbial Biosensors: Protocols and Techniques and Affinity Biosensors: Protocol and Techniques. Prof. Mulchandani has trained dozen Ph.D. students, over 40 Postdoctoral Fellows and is currently advising a dozen Ph.D. students and Postdoctoral Fellows.

Research Interest

Prof. Mulchandani’s primary research interest is in the broad area of “Bio-Nanotechnology” with the overarching goal of developing technologies for the improvement of the quality of life. He applies the tools of biotechnology and nanotechnology for the creation of novel (bio)analytical devices/assays, (bio)remediation technologies, nanomaterial synthesis and protein-based memories. He is internationally recognized as a leader in the development of biosensors for applications in detection of biowarfare and chemical warfare agents for homeland security, disease markers for health care, biological pathogens and toxic industrial chemicals in water, food and the environment and developing environmentally-friendly (green engineering) techniques for heavy metal removal from water and soil and degradation of pesticides and recalcitrant chemicals.
