Dr. Byung-Hee Han is an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery and a faculty member of the Hope Center Program on Protein Aggregation and Neurodegeneration (HPAN) at Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his PhD degree in pharmacology at University of Missouri-Columbia and his post-doctoral training at the Department of Neurology, Washington University. Dr. Han is focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurovascular degeneration and dysfunction associated with neurovascular disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. He is interested in preclinical research to identify therapeutic targets and novel therapeutics for central nervous system disorders. His lab is also working on development of positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracers for the diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Research Interest

Dr. Han’s research interest includes: 1) Apoptotic and necrotic cell death associated with neurovascular injury, 2) The molecular mechanisms by which oxidative stress induces neurovascular dysfunction and antioxidative strategy to treat neurovascular disease, 3) Signaling cascades implicated in neuronal injury, amyloid β production and catabolism in mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease, and 4) An exploratory study to identify novel PET imaging tracers that preferentially bind cerebrovascular amyloid over neuritic plaques and examine their feasibility for live imaging for the diagnosis of amyloid deposition.
