Charlton McIlwain is associate professor of media, culture and communication at New York University, where he focuses on the intersections of race, politics and communication in his research, writing and teaching. Charlton McIlwain is associate professor of media, culture and communication at New York University, where he focuses on the intersections of race, politics and communication in his research, writing and teaching. Formerly a communications director for congressional and gubernatorial campaigns, McIlwain has published a number of books and journal articles and regularly provides analysis for state, national and international media. He is codirector of The Project on Race in Political Communication.

Research Interest

Issues of race and media, particularly within the social and political arena. His previous work examines a variety of issues such as: how do political candidates construct and mobilize race-based appeals through language and visual imagery.
