Biography

Prof David Sheehan is currently Professor (Scale 2) in the Dept of Biochemistry, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. He was awarded a First Class Hons. B.Sc. (1H), by UCC in 1980 and a PhD by Trinity College Dublin in 1985 for his work on glutathione transferases. After working in various industrial roles in Ireland, the US and UK, he was appointed as a lecturer in UCC in 1989. He runs the Proteomics Research Group in the Dept of Biochemistry and has published 94 peer-reviewed papers, numerous other publications such as book chapters and four books including: Bioremediation Protocols (Humana, 1997); Physical Biochemistry: Principles and Applications (Wileys, 2000, 2010) and Two Dimensional Electrophoresis Protocols (Springer, 2010). His research interests include enzymology and biochemistry of glutathione transferases, effects of stress on proteins especially in contexts of enzymology and protein structure, redox proteomics and novel proteomics selection methods. He is a frequent grant reviewer and has refereed  for Wellcome Trust (UK); NERC (UK), BBSRC (UK), Association for International Cancer Research (UK), Alzheimer′s Association (USA), Alzheimer′s Society (UK), Nuffield Trust (UK) the EU, Agence National de Recherche (France), Italian Research Council and National Science Foundation (USA). He is also active on several editorial boards:  Journal of Biochemical and Pharmacological Research, Journal of Integrated -OMICS, Journal of Proteome Science and Computational Biology, Toxins, International Journal of Proteomics, Drug Testing and Analysis. He has supervised 15 PhDs and 20 MScs to completion and acted as external examiner for PhDs in Universities of Bergen, Stockholm, Dundee, Nice, Algarve, Lisbon, Cordoba, Seville, Plymouth, Huddersfield, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, Dublin Institute of Technology and Queens University Belfast. Professional Organisations: 2003-DATE Committee member, British Biophysical Society. Awards/Honours: Prof Sheehan was awarded the Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002 and an advanced doctorate, DSc, for his published work by the National University of Ireland in 2009.

Research Interest

Prof Sheehan’s proteomics research group is currently mainly interested in effects of oxidative stress on proteins, especially on thiol groups, within proteomic separations. We are especially interested in developing methods for labelling and enriching for oxidatively-modified proteins which may arise in oxidative stress conditions but also in sub-stress redox homeostasis scenarios. We have applied labeling and selection approaches to two distinct research areas. 1. Chronic kidney disease. This is a key contributor to human mortality and, while it has various causes (such as diabetic nephropathy or ageing), it is usually associated with oxidative stress which triggers fibrosis and loss of kidney function. We have identified proteins in which tyrosines are nitrosylated and also targets for cysteine oxidation and carbonylation in animal models for hypertension. 2. Environmental toxicology. Many environmental pollutants trigger oxidative stress and this can be an early marker of deteriorating environmental status. Using sentinel species in the aquatic environment we have recently applied redox proteomics to detection of effects in response to nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals, drugs of abuse and other emerging categories of environmental pollutants. We have also applied these methods to compare remediation and control sites and even to probe extreme environments such as deep-sea vents.
