Dr. Gary Hoffman received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and pursued advanced training in medicine and rheumatology at the Dartmouth Medical School-Mary Hitchcock Clinic. In being first a clinician, patient experiences steered his research in a many directions, including calcium oxalate arthropathy in kidney failure, inflammatory muscle disease, arachnoiditis and systemic lupus. After 13 years in general rheumatology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the Army and the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, in 1987, he joined Dr. Anthony Fauci’s Vasculitis and Related Diseases Section at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1987 to 1992. He became the head of that section and his career has since focused on vasculitis care and research.

In 1992 he became the Chairman of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases (1992- 2008) at the Cleveland Clinic (CC), where he held the Harold C. Schott Endowed Chair. He is the Founder of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Vasculitis Care and Research, Founder and past Chairman of the International Network for the Study of the Systemic Vasculitides (INSSYS) and Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the CC Lerner College of Medicine. He has led investigations of new therapies for vasculitis and coordinated INSSYS based multi-center studies of diagnostic laboratory and imaging tools to assess vasculitis disease activity. His major current interests are related to large vessel vasculitis etiology and pathogenic factors that are involved in determining organ vulnerability and selective targeting. Dr Hoffman has authored over 340 articles and chapters and edited 4 books. Past awards include the NIH Director's Award, the NIAID Director's Award, Wegener's Foundation Award, William Ischmael Award, Pemberton Award, Ira Goldstein Memorial Lecture Award (NYU), Sam and Maria Miller Award for excellence in clinical research, as well as awards for teaching.

Dr. Hoffman has served on 15 Editorial Boards of numerous rheumatology journals, and is the former Editor of Current Opinion in Rheumatology. He has also served on the Board of the Vasculitis Foundation and several non-profit organizations that provide medical care and education for the under-served. He is a former American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Board member, was the 2010 ACR Distinguished Clinical Investigator and is a Master of the ACR.
