Dr Goultchira Chakirova received her medical degree including internship in Psychiatry in 2004 from the Novosibirsk State Medical University (NSMU) in Russia. During her studies she began her first research on the human consciousness which was acknowledged by numerous awards and nominated by the NSMU for the prestigious award from the Russian Academy of Science for young researchers. She worked as a Psychiatrist in Russia and in Zambia. This inspired her interests in cultural influences on Psychiatry. After completing her MSc in Neuroscience by Research with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) she continued as a PhD student at the Department of Psychiatry in the University of Edinburgh investigating orbitofrontal and cingulate morphology and their structural and functional associations in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and their unaffected relatives. She is currently a managing director of the Human Brain Research Foundation in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Research Interest

Consciousness including altered states of consciousness.
Memory, attention, decision making, impulsivity and violence.
The orbitofrontal and cingulate morphology.
Neuroimaging and Neuroimaging genetics.
Psychiatry especially schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and cultural influences on Psychiatry.
