Biography

Henkie Tan, MD, PhD, is associate professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Children′s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. He also serves as an assistant professor of surgery of the living donor kidney transplantation program at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute.
Dr. Tan performed the first purely laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy and developed the laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy program at UPMC where approximately 100 such operations are performed each year. He also performed the first dual kidney transplant at UPMC. Dr. Tan focuses on living donor kidney and liver transplantation and performs kidney, pancreas and liver transplants.
Dr. Tan received his combined M.D. and Ph.D. from the Medical Scientist Training Program at Loma Linda University. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology/Immunology under the direction of Dr. Nelsen-Cannarella, a former student of Nobel Laureate Sir Peter Medawar. He completed his multi-organ transplant surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Among Dr. Tan’s professional affiliations, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, American Society of Transplantation, the Transplantation Society, International Pediatric Transplantation Society, International Liver Transplantation Society, Central Surgical Association, Association for Academic Surgery and the Society of University Surgeons.
Dr. Tan served as the 2005-06 chair of the American Society of Transplantation Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Committee and the 2005-07 co-chair and the 2007-08 chair of the Organ Donation Committee, among others. He has published widely in numerous transplant journals and books and is an editor of the textbook Living Donor Organ Transplantation: State of the Art. He has been nominated for America′s Top Surgeons and Best Doctors in America.
