Biography

Dr. Hirotaka Sakamoto is a behavioral neuroendocrinologist and Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan. He finished his Ph.D. course (Neuroscience) of the Laboratory of Brain Science, Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima, Japan, in 2002. He has been employed as a post-doctoral fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2002–2003, and afterwards as a Research Associate at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology), Kyoto, Japan in 2003–2009, during which he got another Ph.D. (Medical Science) from the University in 2009. Presently, his specialty is in the hormonal regulation of behavior in vertebrates, with a specific focus on the effects of stress or sex steroid hormones on behaviors, or both, including neural networks underlying sexual function. He won the several Young Investigator Awards from many Japanese Academic Societies, indicating that he is an outstanding researcher. He has a lot of papers published in international journals and serving as a reviewer in many papers.

Research Interest

Sexual differentiation of the brain and spinal cord. Permanent (gemonic) and transient (non-gemonic) effects of hormones on neurons. Effects of severe psychological stresses on neurons.
