Biography

James Lambers is an assistant professor and the director of graduate studies in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Southern Mississippi, and an affiliate of the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University. He received his PhD at Stanford in Scientific Computing and Computational Mathematics in 2003 under the direction of Joseph Oliger and Gene Golub. Prior to coming to USM, he served as a postgraduate researcher in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine and an acting assistant professor in the Department of Energy Resources Engineering at Stanford. He has published 28 peer-reviewed articles in journals and conference proceedings (Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications, Journal of Scientific Computing, Numerical Algorithms, etc.) and won three Best Paper awards based on his work on Krylov Subspace Spectral (KSS) methods.

Research Interest

His research interests include spectral methods for time-dependent PDE, approximation of bilinear forms involving matrix functions, coarse-scale modeling of flow in porous media, and image processing via nonlinear diffusion.
