Joanne Connolly is Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Microbiology in the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences and Course Coordinator of the Captive Vertebrate (Zoo Animals) Management Program at Charles Sturt University, NSW. She worked in veterinary practices in Tasmania and Queensland with domestic animals, zoo animal and wildlife. This was followed by a PhD on the immunopathological characterisation of infectious disease in the koala and the platypus. Joanne has taught anatomy, pathology and microbiology in Australia and New Zealand. 

Research Interest

Her academic interests include microbiology, zoo animal welfare, pathology and wildlife disease. Her research areas include mucormycosis and theileriosis in platypus; lymphoid neoplasia, cryptococcosis and chlamydial disease in the koala; epidemiology, pathogenicity and immunogenicity of the Salmonella in birds, reptiles and mammals; Campylobacter spp. in cattle, poultry and dogs; and emerging disease in kangaroos. Joanne is a Queen’s Award recipient and a research member of the Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation.
