Biography

Jordi B. Torrelles is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University. He joined the faculty since 2008 and is past recipient of the James V. Warren Award as recognition of outstanding and excellence in research performed in the Department of Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University and also the Parker B. Francis Fellowship in pulmonary research. He obtained his M.Sc. in clinical microbiology and his Ph.D. in biochemistry and microbiology from the “Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona”, Catalonia, Spain, performing his studies in the Mycobacteria Research Laboratories at Colorado State University studying Mycobacterium tuberculosis cell envelope biochemistry. He did his postdoctoral training at The Ohio State University where he started his work on innate immunity focusing on Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogenesis.

Research Interest

His laboratory is focused on understanding M. tuberculosis and host interactions at the molecular, biochemical and cellular levels. In particular, his interest is on how the structure of the cell envelope of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacillus is affected by the lung alveolar microenvironment and how this may affect the outcome of M. tuberculosis infection.
