Prof. L.P. Awasthi, formerly Head, Department of Plant Pathology, N.D. University of Agriculture & Technology, Narendra nagar (Kumarganj), Faizabad (U.P.) India. is a distinguished scientist who has made significant contributions to the field of Plant Pathology in general and Plant Virology in particular . He has done his graduation, post graduation and proficiency in French Language besides Ph.D. in Botany (Plant Pathology/ Virology) from Lucknow University, Lucknow- India. Prof. Awasthis’ area of specialization is Virology and professional experience includes more than 44 years of teaching Plant Pathology. He has guided 84 M. Sc. (Ag.) and 41 Ph.D. students. He has long research experience on different aspects of plant pathology/ virology.

Research Interest

• The diagnosis and characterization of viral diseases of important crop plants.
• Purification, isolation and characterization of antiviral agents from higher plants (phyto -antivirals).
• Molecular characterization of the resistance inducing and defensive antiviral proteins from plants.
• Mode of action of systemic resistance inducing -phyto-antivirals (SRIPs) in different host-virus combinations.
• Purification, isolation and characterization of defensive antiviral proteins from induced host plants following treatment with phyto -antiviral agents (SRIPs).
• Antiviral efficacy of defensive antiviral proteins from induced host plants following treatment with phyto -antiviral agents (SRIPs).
• The eco-friendly management of the viral diseases of crops through phyto -antivirals (antiviral agents of plant origin-botanicals). . Prof. Awasthi has published more than 350 research papers in foreign and Indian journals of repute, many popular articles in Hindi and English in Agriculture journals/ bulletins, laboratory manuals and has a lot of contributory chapters in edited books. Prof. Awasthi visited Karl-Marx University Leipzig, University of Berlin, Institute of Plant Pathology, Ascherslavan, and Haale University, Germany.
