Biography

Laurent Fleury is Professor of Sociology at the Université Paris Diderot (Paris 7) where he is director of the Master’s course in Cultural Policies and the Master’s course in Sociology and Anthropology: Politics, Culture, Migrations. He is also an agrégé in Social Sciences and holds a doctorate in Political Science. Laurent Fleury is the author of a number of books, including two on French institutions that have had a revolutionary impact on the way in which cultural practices are structured: Le T.N.P. de Vilar. Une expérience de démocratisation de la culture, (Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2006) and Le cas Beaubourg. Mécénat d’Etat et démocratisation de la culture (with a preface by Bernard Stiegler, Paris, Armand Colin, 2007), and Sociologie de la culture et des pratiques culturelles (Armand Colin, 2011). He is also the author of Sociology of Culture and Cultural Practices: The Transformative Power of Institutions (with a preface by Terry Clark, Lexington Books, Chicago, 2013). Member of the Editorial Board of the journal, Sociologie de l’art, and of the Editorial Board of the Revue de l’Institut de Sociologie (Brussels), Laurent Fleury is President of the Research Committee (CR18) on the Sociology of Art and Culture of the Association Internationale des Sociologues de Langue Française (A.I.S.L.F.) He is also the author of Max Weber (Presses Universitaires de France, 2009) and Comprendre Weber (Armand Colin, forthcoming, 2014).
