Associate Professor
Pharmacology & Pharmaceutical Sciences
University of Southern California

Dr. Zhao received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Shenyang Pharmaceutical University in China in 1999. She continued her postdoctoral research in neuroscience at the Beijing Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, where she was awarded two prestigious grants on neurodegenerative disease drug discovery from the China Postdoctoral Research Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Dr. Zhao joined the University of Southern California (USC) in 2002 and is now a Research Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy. Dr. Zhao has served as a PI/Co-PI on multiple funded projects including two investigator-initiated grants from the Alzheimer’s Association, one clinical trial (R01) and two program project (P01) grants from the National Institute on Aging. She has authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed research articles, 50 conference presentations, 5 patents, and served as an editor/reviewer for over 30 medical research journals.

Research Interest

Two-level interdisciplinary research on neuroendocrine aging and neurodegeneration (with an emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease; AD) aims:
1. At the basic level, to understand the neurobiological effects of sex hormones and the molecular basis underlying sex differences in the risk of developing AD. Some particular areas of interest include menopause/perimenopause, insulin/IGF signaling, cellular bioenergetics, amyloid metabolism, apolipoproteins, and gene expression and regulation.
2. At the translational level, to advance basic scientific findings into therapeutic development for prevention and early intervention of age-related conditions and neurodegeneration.
Some particular areas of focus include non-hormonal alternative therapies, estrogen receptor betaselective modulators, phytochemicals, and lifestyles in modulation of aging.
