Biography

Liu Jiang is currently affiliated to Marshall University and University of Toledo College of Medicine, USA, continuing research in the oxidative stress and Na/K-ATPase signaling transduction in renal sodium handling, salt-sensitive hypertension as well as renal/cardiac fibrosis and organ remodeling.During my research career, through collaboration with Drs. Joseph I. Shapiro and Zijian Xie and other investigators, we demonstrated that cardiotonic steroids- and ROS-mediated Na/K-ATPase signaling is involved in renal sodium handling, and the relevance of the signaling functions of Na/K-ATPase to the pathophysiology of renal and cardiovascular diseases and salt sensitivity. Recently, we demonstrated that cardiotonic steroids signaling through the Na/K-ATPase, generated ROS which is essential for the overall signal transduction.

Research Interest

My research interest is the roles of endogenous cardiotonic steroids, oxidative stress and Na/K-ATPase signaling transduction in renal sodium handling, salt-sensitive hypertension as well as renal/cardiac fibrosis and organ remodeling. During my research career, through collaboration with Drs. Joseph I. Shapiro and Zijian Xie and other investigators, we demonstrated that cardiotonic steroids- and ROS-mediated Na/K-ATPase signaling is involved in renal sodium handling, and the relevance of the signaling functions of Na/K-ATPase to the pathophysiology of renal and cardiovascular diseases and salt sensitivity. Recently, we demonstrated that cardiotonic steroids signaling through the Na/K-ATPase, generated ROS which is essential for the overall signal transduction. In particular, we identified the link of cardiotonic steroids mediated changes in renal salt handling with endocytosis of Na/K-ATPase which together with the ROS signaling forms the platform for a novel mechanism and potential drug and nutrient target.
