Manav Kapoor

Biography

Dr. Manav Kapoor is working as Assistant Professor Genetics and Genomic Sciences at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sina and is a human geneticist with over 10 years of research experience in genetics studies of psychiatric disorders including substance dependence. His major project is the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). He had led genome-wide association analysis in Dr. Alison Goate’s lab and identified several novel genes associated with risk of alcohol consumption and age at onset of alcohol dependence. Currently at Mount Sinai, he is a leading next-gen sequencing analysis in selected COGA families to find rare variants responsible for alcohol addiction. He is also working on long range phasing based SNP infer/imputation methods in subjects from large families where only founders and few more subjects have been sequenced. His long-term goal is to establish myself as a successful researcher in field of addiction genetics and contribute to analytic methodologies to understand addictions during developmental period.

Research Interest

My research is distinguished by its translational and interdisciplinary focus, integrating genetic and functional studies of the molecular basis of substance dependence. At Mount Sinai I will lead the genetic studies within the COGA (Collaborative Studies on Genetics of Alcoholism) Molecular Genetics laboratory. I will play a lead in genetic studies of alcohol dependence and related disorders, and strengthen the educational efforts in substance dependence and genetics.
