Milen Georgiev

Biography

Dr. Milen I. Georgiev is an Associate Professor of Institute of Microbiology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria. Also holds a Marie Curie Fellow position in Institute of Biology, Leiden University, The Netherlands.
He has received a PhD in Plant Biotechnology from the Institute of Microbiology, Bulgaria in 2002-2005.
Member of Phytochemical Society of Europe, Phytochemical Society of North America and European Federation of Biotechnology.
He has been a recipient of Marin Drinov award in 2008 and a Pythagoras award in 2011.
His research is focused on the biotechnology of medicinal and aromatic plants with special emphasis on the biosynthesis of iridoid and phenylethanoid glycosides from African plant Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) and Verbascum species. He authored/co-authored 50 scientific papers and served as a Guest Editor for two journals.

Medicinal plants and their uses, Plant in vitro systems, Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformations, Secondary metabolism (biosynthesis of iridoids, phenylpropanoids, alkaloids) Bioreactor systems and bioengineering NMR Metabolomics, Optimization of bioprocesses, Evaluation of biological activities (antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors), Biomonitoring through flow cytometry.
