After graduating from the faculty of Pharmacy at Cairo University in 1998, Dr. Salama completed her doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences with emphasis on pharmacokinetics, drug transporters and drug delivery at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 2004 under Dean Natalie Eddingtons mentorship. In 2006, she completed a 2-year fellowship in the Pharmacogenomics of drug transporters at the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in Seattle. During this fellowship, she focused on studying the in vitro influence of P-glycoprotein single nucleotide polymorphisms and genetic haplotypes on protein expression and functionality. Dr. Salama pursued additional postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in January 2007 with more clinical research emphasis in Nephrology and Critical Care. She is among the first cohort of scholars who competed and received training scholarships in clinical and translational research as part of the Postdoctoral Translational Scholars Program (PTSP) at Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICH-R). This program is part of the Clinical and Translational Science award grant from The National Institutes of Health to the University of Michigan.

In July 2009, Dr. Salama completed her training at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, where she retains an adjunct instructor and visiting researcher position and she joined St. Louis College of Pharmacy as an assistant professor at the Division of Basic and Pharmaceutical Sciences. During her scientific career, Dr. Salama authored and co-authored 15 research manuscripts, 5 review articles and one book chapter, published in peer reviewed international journals. Dr. Salama received multiple awards and gave several research presentations. She was recently invited to share her research findings as podium presentations at the 2009 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Annual Meeting and Exposition (Nov 8-12, 2009, Los Angeles, CA) and at the 3rd Annual Conference on Proteins and Peptides (PepCon-2010) (March 21-23, 2010, Beijing, China). At St. Louis, Dr. Salama continues to pursue her research endeavors in the area of pharmacokinetics, and drug transporters.
