Biography

Paolo Muiesan graduated in Medicine at the University of Milan (Italy). He continued his education as a resident in General Surgery and then further specialized in Vascular Surgery at the University of Milan. He trained in adult and paediatric liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at King′s College Hospital in London. To complete the transplant training he visited the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Western Ontario in 1996 and Kyoto University Transplant Centre in 1998 as Visiting Professor. He became Consultant Surgeon in HPB Surgery and Transplantation at King’s College Hospital in 1998 and moved to Birmingham Queen Elizabeth and Children’s Hospitals ten years later.
Mr. Muiesan′s clinical interests and research focus on living donor and auxiliary liver transplantation and transplantation from donors after cardiac death and has been author/coauthor in over 120 publications. He visited the Asan Medical Centre in Seoul in 2008 and 2009 in preparation to start the Living Donor Liver Transplant program in Birmingham and attended 5 courses on laparoscopic liver surgery. Further interests include liver and pancreatic resective surgery, open and laparoscopic, and radiofrequency ablation of primary and secondary liver tumours.
He organised 5 International Meetings on Transplantation from Non-Heart Beating Donors and contributes as Educational Committee member and as faculty to Courses organised by the European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT), and the UK and Spanish agencies for organ donation and transplantation. He is Associate Editor of the Journal Liver Transplantation and in the Editorial Board of Transplant International and other HPB Surgery and Transplant Journals. He is an active member of several national and European committees and current Secretary of the European Liver Intestine Transplantation Association (ELITA).

Research Interest

Mr. Muiesan′s clinical interests and research focus on living donor and auxiliary liver transplantation and transplantation from donors after cardiac death. Further interests include liver and pancreatic resective surgery, open and laparoscopic, and radiofrequency ablation of primary and secondary liver tumours.
