Biography

Dr. Peter Abadir is a clinician scientist in the Division of Geriatrics Medicine and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins University, where he is also an attending physician at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Abadir obtained his residency training at the University of Kentucky, followed by fellowship in Geriatrics and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins University. He also had postdoctoral fellowship training on the biology of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) in cells, humans and animal models. Dr. Abadir’s studies on the interface between aging and RAS in older humans have articulated a tight link between RAS activation and the development of age related chronic inflammation. Dr. Abadir have led the effort to identify a functional mitochondrial RAS in an aging mouse model that was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. Dr. Abadir’s research has been recognized by several national organizations. He received a New Investigator Awards sponsored by Pharmacia (2002), Aventis (2003) and Merck (2004) at annual meetings of the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research. In 2003, he was awarded the Endocrine Society Hot Topics in Endocrinology Award for Exception-al Research and he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the North American Primary Care Research Group. He was also recognized by the American Geriatrics Society with several awards including the 2013 Merck New Investigator award, the Geriatric Bioscience Best paper award, and the Geriatric bioscience presidential poster award. One of his papers was cited by the faculty of 1000 Prime publishers as a “must read” paper as well as “cutting edge medicine” on a “Circulation Re-search” journal editorial (Inagami T. Commentaries on Cutting Edge Science. Circulation Re-search 2011:109). Dr. Abadir has been awarded several career development awards including the prestigious Johns Hopkins Clinical Scientist Award, the American Geriatrics Society T. Franklin Williams Scholars Award for Junior Faculty, the Wound Healing Society 3M Scholarship Award, and the Hartford Center of Excellence Award.
