Biography

Dr. Prashant Kumar started as a Lecturer in 2009, became a Senior Lecturer in 2012, in the Division of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey (UK). He obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK) and holds a masters degree in Environmental Engineering and Management from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (India). His research focuses on urban air pollution and wind flows, with a special emphasis on atmospheric ultrafine/nanoparticles, their measurement using advanced instrumentation, dispersion modelling using numerical, wind tunnel and CFD tools, and implications for regulatory control. His research has attracted international recognition and resulted in over 35 journal papers and a similar number of conference articles and presentations. He is currently serving as an ‘Executive Editor’ for an international journal and a reviewer for EPSRC, NERC and Austrian Science Fund. He has secured research funding from numerous UK and European funding bodies and disseminated the research in broad range of journals, conferences and invited lectures in the UK, Europe, Asia and USA.

Research Interest

Prashant current research focuses on evaluating and mitigating the environmental impacts of road transport on urban air quality, with a special focus on measurements of atmospheric nanoparticles using advanced instruments and dispersion modelling using wind tunnel, numerical and computational tools. His secondary interests include assessment of road vehicles–derived air pollutants on climate change and public infrastructure, besides looking at the efficient energy use for future cities, and carbon capture and storage. Prashant has authored over 35 journal articles (and about the same number of conference articles) in top–ranked journals, winning awards at various international conferences for his outstanding academic performance and research contributions, and obtaining highly competitive research grants as a young researcher. He is involved in numerous research projects funded by the UK and European research councils. Prashant is currently reviewing for over 15 peer-reviewed international journals and is a member of editorial board of two scientific journals. He is supervising a number of under– and post–graduate project students, besides PhD and post-doctoral researchers.
