Biography

Dr. Qun Zhou completed his M.D. training and primary patient care, and then received PhD in pharmacology and toxicology from West Virginia University. His postdoctoral fellowship undertook in Johns Hopkins University. He has focused a significant problem in breast cancer, the impact of epigenetic regulation (Histone deacetylation and DNA methylation) on gene expression. Early work revealed chromatin configuration including DNA methylation and histone deacetylation forms a repressor complex at the silenced estrogen receptor α (ERα) promoter. His studies provided a new insight that epigenetic regulation is a potential mechanism for ERα gene silencing in the ERα-negative phenotype of patients with breast cancer. His second work was to study how histone deacetylation impacts DNA methytrasnferease in breast cancer. He identified that disruption of Hsp90 function by HDAC inhibitors is a unique mechanism that mediates the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for DNMT1degradation. As a new independent investigator, he has developed a new research program in microRNAs and defined impact of key miRNAs on cancer stem cell transformation.
