Biography

Dr. Boissy is the professor of dermatology and also the adjunct professor of anatomy/ cell biology at the University of Cincinnati. He has also served as Associate professor of dermatology till the year 2001.The primary research interest in the laboratory of Raymond E. Boissy focuses on the cell and molecular biology of the melanocyte responsible for the synthesis of melanin in the skin. This included assess trafficking mechanisms that escort a family of melanocyte specific proteins from the Golgi apparatus to a specialized organelle, the premelanosome. The premelanosome ultimately matures into a distinct environment that allows for the elaborate conversion of tyrosine to various types of melanin. Eventually, pigmented melanosomes are translocated along dendritic process to be position for transfer to neighboring keratinocytes of the epidermis. In addition to the basic science analysis of melanogenesis, the laboratory is also investigating the pathophysiology of various pigmentary diseases. He hsas more than 100 publications.
