Richard L. Doty is the Director of the Smell and Taste Center and Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia. The author or co author of more than 350 professional publications, as well as 9 books, he serves as an editorial consultant to over 50 scientific journals. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the James A. Shannon Award from the National Institutes of Health (1996), the Scientific Sense of Smell Award from the Olfactory Research Fund (2000), the William Osler Patient-Oriented Research Award from the University of Pennsylvania (2003), the Service Award from the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (2004), and the Association for Chemoreception Science’s Max Mozell Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Chemical Senses (2005). He was elected to fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2005. Dr. Doty received the B.S. degree in psychology from Colorado State University (1966), the M.A. degree from California State University, San Jose, in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Soace Administration, Moffett Field, CA (1968), and the Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University, East Lansing (1971). He received post-doctoral fellowship training at the University of California, Berkeley (1971-1973), and at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (1973-1975).
