Biography

Dr. Iturriaga has received his BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Chile in 1967. In 1969, he pursued his MSc in Marine Biology from the University of Chile. He received his PhD in Microbiology in 1977 from the University of Kiel, Germany under the guidance of Prof. Dr. G. Rheinheimer. He has received his Post Doctoral in 1978 from Duke University, N.C. He was honored with the following SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS: 1967 University of Chile, with honors 1969 University of Chile, with honors 1970-1971 German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) 1972-1973 Organization of the American States (OAS) 1974-1976 Alexander von Humboldt Foundation 1977 "cum laude" award for dissertation 1994 Naval Research Laboratory, Stennis Space Center. Performance Award From 1986 to 1992 he held the position of Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, USC, from 1992-1993, Research Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, USC. From 1993-1994 he held the post of Physical Scientist, Naval Research Laboratory, Stennis Space Center, Mississippi 1995-2003 Research Associate Professor, Wrigley Institute of Environmental Studies, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 1996-2011 President, SpectraScan Corp.Inc. Seal Beach, CA In 2012 he was appointed as Chief Senior Scientist, NASA /ARTS, Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. Currently he holds the position of Adjunct Associate Research Professor, Marine Section, Dept. of Biological Sciences, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA He has participated in more than 50 research cruises conducted in the South and North Atlantic, Baltic, Pacific and South East Asian oceans and has also conducted Polar Researches in McMurdo, Antarctica in 1987, CEAREX, North Pole in 1988 and in Barrow, Alaska from 1992 to 1994.
