Dr Sam Martin is a senior lecturer in Fish Physiology within the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences (IBES), University of Aberdeen, UK. Sam gained his PhD from Queens University, Belfast, examining and cloning pituitary hormone genes in Atlantic salmon to help understand the control of the parr smolt transformation. He did postdoctoral research in University of Glasgow, National University of Ireland, Galway and University of Aberdeen, before being appointed lecturer in 2007 at Aberdeen. Sam’s research group focuses on gene expression in salmonid fish related to both immune function, protein metabolism and nutritional aspects of fish health. He has developed microarrays to examine global gene expression in salmon and trout and has also used proteomics to examine differential protein expression in both nutritional experiments in trout and salmon. Sam is a member of the Scottish Fish Immunology Research Centre based in IBES which is a world leading fish immunology group. Sam has published over 45 papers in peer reviewed journals and has funds his from EU, BBSRC, NERC and industrial collaborations.
