Dr Sumit Handa has obtained his PhD degree in Biochemistry from University of South Florida, USA, under the guidance of Dr. David J. Merkler. His work was focused on the discovery of the novel targets in the development of antibiotics and antimalarial compounds. Major emphasis was to target the non-mevalonate pathway for isoprenoid synthesis in parasite (such as plasmodium), bacteria, and some plants (weed). In his postdoc work with Dr. Partho Ghosh at University of California, San Diego, he is working on Diversity-generating retroelements (DGR) to uncover the underlying mechanism of reverse transcriptase mediated protein diversification. This DGR mechanism is used by pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria and archaeal species to overcome the ever changing environment and survive under various obstacles.

Research Interest

Protein-protein interaction, mechanistic enzymology, RNA/DNA binding protein biochemistry, biophysics and structure biology.
