Biography

Dr. Sung O. Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Western University, Canada. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Medicine (1998) from University of British Columbia and a post-doctoral training (1999-2003) in immunology from the Scripps Research Institute (San Diego, CA). He was then recruited to the University of Western Ontario and also affiliated with the Centre of Human Immunology and the Canadian Research and Development Centre for Probiotics. Throughout his career, he was awarded multiple training, professional and research awards including Canadian Institute of Health Research New Investigator award and Early Research Award from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. His research has produced more than 43 research articles in the area of innate immunity signaling mechanisms.

Research Interest

His research program is to unravel the signaling and epigenetic mechanisms of host innate immune cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells in interacting with various microbes including bacterial and viral pathogens, and probiotics. His current research focuses on the role and mechanism of pyroptic cell death induced by bacterial toxins and viral factors, and probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus rhamnosus in infection, immunity and immunomodulation.
