Professor Tiina Rekand qualified as a medical doctor from the University of Tartu, Estonia in 1985 after which she specialized in neurology. During the studies in the university and after graduation her research focused on stroke and cerebrovascular diseases. Moving to Norway in 1990, she works from 1994 at the Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen. She defended PhD in 2003 at the University of Bergen, Norway about molecular mechanisms and clinical consequences of poliomyelitis. Since 2003 her clinical work as well as scientific interests are focused on several aspects of spinal cord injuries. Collaboration with the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg in Sweden, is aimed to explore different aspects of spinal cord injuries and improvement of rehabilitation after such injuries. Her other scientific interests include management of chronic neuropathic pain and spasticity as well as consequences of stroke and multiple sclerosis. She has published scientific works in international peer-reviewed journals, and has contributed to several chapters in medical textbooks. She has served on a number of congress scientific committees and has lectured and presented her scientific work on several international educational activities in recent years.
