Biography

Triin Vihalemm is a sociologist and Professor of Communication Research at the University of Tartu, Institute of Journalism, Communication and Information Studies. Her main fields of research are sociology of ethnic relations, collective identity, language policy and language practices, transition societies and transition culture, public communication as a means of policy implementation and peoples’ media-related everyday practices. She has been involved in several local and international research projects on identities – how they are created, communicated and transformed. Research into integration problems in Estonia has provided her with good experience in analysing the interface between structural prescriptions, institutional policies and peoples’ everyday practices. As an expert, she has cooperated with various political and public organisations in working out integrative policies and programmes.
