Dr. Wayne L. Monsky, MD, PhD first received a Masters Degree in Physiology at Georgetown University before earning his MD and PhD at Georgetown University from the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology were his Thesis focused on mechanisms of neoplastic cell invasion and metastasis characterizing cell surface proteases. He then completed a Surgical Internship, Radiology Residency and Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology, all at Harvard University’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He also conducted Post-Doctoral studies at Massachusetts General Hospital with Dr. Rakesh Jain, investigating tumor microvascular physiology. Translational research then focused on minimally invasive tumor therapies, such as radiofrequency ablation, intratumoral drug delivery and imaging based assessment of tumor response to therapy. Currently he is serving as the Director of Interventional Radiology for Harborview Medical Center, a University of Washington Hospital. He continues studies focused on functional and volumetric tumor imaging, minimally invasive tumor therapies and device design.

Research Interest

His current research focuses is on volumetric and functional imaging of hepatic tumors, breast cancer, and Sarcoma to evaluate response to therapy such as chemoembolization, adjuvant and anti-angiogenic therapies. He continues to investigate strategies to optimize image guided minimally invasive tumor therapies such as radiofrequency ablation and intratumoral infusion. Investigations are also being conducted to evaluate the affect of angiography and chemoembolization on renal physiology. Device design and optimization has focused on intravascular thrombectomy, thrombolysis as well as intratumoral delivery of therapeutics.
