Whasun Oh Chung is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Biology School of Dentistry University of Washington. She is also the Director of Summer Research Fellowship Program at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. She was honored as a University of Washington Nominee for Burroughs Welcome Award in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease in 2008. She has also served on Special Emphasis Review Sections at the National Institutes of Health. In addition she has served as a reviewer for 5 grant foundations and 13 scientific journals.

Research Interest

Regulation of human beta-defensins in oral epithelial cells; Role of commensal vs. pathogenic bacteria in epithelial innate immunity; Role of protease-activated receptors in epithelial innate immunity; Differential utilization of signaling pathways in oral epithelial responses to bacteria; Cross-communication between epithelial cell receptors in innate immune responses; Role of protease inhibitors in oral health and disease; Titanate-metal complexes as new antimicrobials in dentistry.
