Biography

William Robert Fleischmann, Jr. (Bob) received his Ph.D. in 1972 from Purdue University. He has served on the faculties of the Idaho State University (Pocatello, ID), University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston, TX) and the University of Minnesota Medical School (Minneapolis, MN). He is the author of more than 125 original articles and invited reviews. His research laboratory has focused on the antiviral, antitumor, and immunological properties of interferons and other cytokines. His laboratory’s early research demonstrated that IFN-g synergistically interacted with IFN-a and IFN-b, sensitizing the scientific community to the interactions of cytokines.  Perhaps most notably, his laboratory made the initial demonstration in mice that colony-stimulating factors could be employed to reverse bone marrow suppression. His laboratory’s current research is directed toward the development of a prostate cancer vaccine, using IL-15-transfected prostate cancer cells as a vaccine.
