Research Interest

Dr. Guan’s research interests are to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which nutrients and hormones interact to control the gut growth & function; and influence energy balance & glucose homeostasis. Specifically, he wanted to [1] define the physiological function and signaling network of glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) receptor that controls intestinal epithelial growth, absorption and microcirculation; and regulates energy balance and glucose homeostasis. Dr. Guan also wanted to [2] determine the physiological significance of CNS vs. peripheral GLP-1/2 receptors’ activation in the control of glucose homeostasis and energy balance. Lastly, he wanted to [3] elucidate GLP-1/2-mediated neuroendocrine roles in glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity following metabolic surgery. Dr. Guan is a recognized expert in stable isotopic tracer techniques (to assess nutrient uptake and metabolism), hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp (to quantify insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis during), and electrophysiological whole-cell patch clamps to determine activities of ion channels in hypothalamic neurons.
