Biography

Dr. Cala joined College of the Southern Border (El Colegio de la Frontera Sur) in January 2009 as a doctoral fellowship. He was born in Granma, Cuba and has been working in Natural Protected Areas in Cuba and Mexico over 8 years; In addition, he has been living in Chetumal, Mexico for over 4 years. His areas of expertise include integrated planning and management, biological conservation, marine protected areas, fisheries ecology, stock enhancement, seagrass ecology, ecology of sandy beaches, aquaculture and marine ecology. He has published over 25 papers inspired by his various research and management projects and over the years has participated in several management and conservation projects in Cuba and Mexico. He has received several grants and scholarships to undertake a number of courses and congress about marine sciences and ecology. Dr. Cala is a leader in the Mesoamerican Reef Program by the Mexican Fund for Nature Conservancy (2012 generation), is member of Mesoamerican Society of Conservation Biology and reviewer of The Journal of Coastal Research. He completed his PhD in ecology and sustainable development on 2013 (January 31) and his research is focused in the analysis of age and growth patterns, habitat requirements, habitat selection and current problems in fisheries management of conchs.

Integrated planning and management, biological conservation, marine protected areas, fisheries ecology, stock enhancement, seagrass ecology, ecology of sandy beaches, aquaculture, marine ecology, natural history and ecology of marine conchs, Management of Coastal Resources, ecology of sandy beach, Assessment of damage to flora and fauna in the wake of natural disasters (hurricanes).
