Dr. Mathew Varkey is a Research Fellow at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine with Dr. Anthony Atala. His research areas include 3-D organ bioprinting, tissue regeneration, organ fibrosis and development of 3-D engineered native and disease models. He is currently constructing human skin equivalents by 3-D bioprinting for drug and chemical testing. He is also constructing tissue engineered skeletal muscle from induced pluripotent cells to develop skeletal muscle fibrosis models. Dr. Varkey received his PhD in Experimental Surgery from University of Alberta, Canada, where he developed novel non-scarring tissue engineered skin to treat burn patients and others with extensive skin loss. He obtained his MS in Chemical & Materials Engineering from the same university for his work on preclinical development of a bone anabolic agent for osteoporosis therapy. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Bioinformatics. Dr. Varkey has four years of professional industry experience as a Scientist in bioinformatics and biopharmaceutical companies. He has vast experience in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine working on skin, skeletal muscle, bone and dental tissue. He has published 19 research articles and 2 book chapters and presented at numerous international meetings. He is a language editor for the Central European Journal of Chemistry and a reviewer for the journals Tissue Engineering, Acta Biomaterialia, Zhejiang-Science B, Medical Science Monitor, Current Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, and Plastic Surgery: Clinics in Surgery.
