Biography

Dr. Monica Fedele is Researcher (level II) and Principal Investigator at the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology and Oncology of the Italian National Research Council. She received a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Pathology, defending a thesis on the role of HMGA2 rearrangements in lipomas and pituitary adenomas through the generation of transgenic mice, and a Residency in Clinical Pathology, defending a thesis on the generation and phenotypic analysis of PATZ1-knockout mice. Her postdoctoral training at the Kimmel Cancer Institute in Philadelphia, USA, focused on animal models for studying the role of HMGA and PATZ1 genes in development and cancer. Her main scientific achievements have been the demonstration of the oncogenic activity of the chromatin proteins HMGA1 and HMGA2, the discovery of their critical role in the development of pituitary adenomas, and the isolation and characterization of the cancer-related gene PATZ1. Her current research interests include mechanisms of cellular transformation in development and cancer and are focused on the role of PATZ1.
