Biography

Dr. Smith has Over 25 years’ experience in the Chemical and Petrochemical Industry. Currently Dr. Smith serves as Director of the Energy Research and Development Center at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formally, Missouri-Rolla). Dr. Smith has published over 40 papers, has given more than 70 conference papers, and holds eight patents. Dr. Smith has contributed two chapters to the John Zink Combustion Handbook and one chapter to the Industrial Burner Handbook.

Research Interest

His current research interests focus on developing Hybrid Energy Systems which combine legacy energy (coal, gas, nuclear) with renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal). He also conducts research on developing commercial scale processes to recover unconventional hydrocarbons including oil sands/oil shale. Dr. Smith was part of the design team to develop the Dow Chemical Coal Gasification technology (now ConocoPhillips E-GAS) and has founded and led two startup companies to provide engineering services to the petrochemical and fossil power industries.

Dr. Faruque Hossain

Biography

Hossain is an internationally renowned research leader, and he has published hundreds of world-
class papers in very high-impact journals. He wrote six (6) books as a single author published by
Springer Nature and Elsevier in the field of Sustainable Energy and Environment. He also wrote
eighty-two (82) book chapters as a single author published by Springer Nature, Elsevier, and
Routledge in this field. Currently, Hossain is working at the school of architecture and construction
management of Kennesaw State University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor.
Prior joining Kennesaw State University, Hossain secured more than fifteen years of industry
experience in this field in the USA and abroad. He worked/consulted at several fortune-listed
companies (STV, Tutor Perini, Skanska, Delta Airlines, Con Edison, MWH Global) and managed
several multi-billion-dollar Sustainable Energy and Environmental projects. He also worked for
the New York City (NYC) Department of Citywide Administrative Services as a Senior
Management team and interacted with the heads of all public agencies (commissioners), highest
level government officials of local (mayor), state (governor), federal (U.S. government agency
directors and secretaries) and international organization leaders (Secretary-General of the United
Nations, Ex-presidents, etc.) for making policy on Sustainable Energy and Environmental project
for securing the sustainable environment for our planet Earth. His duties included the management
of a research and development fund ($4.6 Billion) for clean energy projects for New York under
the program of PlaNYC for building a sustainable environment for New York. During his tenure
in the NYC DEP as Acting Division Chief, Hossain managed a world-class team of architects,
engineers, contractors, consultants, and scientists from AECOM, Fluor, and maintained the highest
level of professional relationship to enforce Sustainable Energy Transition for all projects in
support of thriving a balanced ecosystem globally.
Hossain is renowned as the industry leader to conduct research, development, and project
management in sustainable energy and environment for thriving a sustainable ecosystem to
protect Mother Earth. Recently, he was leading a team of top-tier architects, and engineers for the
development of energy sustainable JFK Airport, New York ($7 Billion) and US Department of
Transportation MARTA projects in Atlanta ($6 Billion) as a leading consultant. He was also
recently leading another team of world-class architects, engineers, and consultants for the
development of the largest sustainable energy and environmentally friendly project in USA history
($8 Billion for LaGuardia Airport Development) as the chief consultant of Delta Airlines Inc.

Biography

Dr Tang received his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2001 from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. Between 2002-2005, he had been Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellow & NIMS researcher working on solar energy conversion in NIMS, Japan. After that, he moved to the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College as a senior research associate. In 2009, Dr Tang joined the Department of Chemical Engineering, UCL as a Lecturer in Energy. He has been recognized by an Outstanding President’s Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2001), JSPS Fellowship (2003) and Young Scientist Award by the International Association of Catalysis Societies (2008).He is the Guest Editor-in-Chief of a special issue of International Journal of Photoenergy, 2012 and sits on the editorial board of several international journals. He is an Honorary Lecturer in Chemistry at Imperial College London and visiting professor in Chinese Academy of Sciences and so on. Up to now, he has published more than 60 papers with a total citation of ~2400.

His Research Interest are Nanostructured crystals and films synthesis, in particular by microwave promoted flow chemistry; Solar H2 synthesis; CO2 capture and conversion to a renewable fuel (Artificial Photosynthesis); Inorganic/polymer hybrid solar cell; Photocatalytic contaminant decomposition;Biomaterials; Microwave catalysis.

Fawzi Banat

Biography

Professor Fawzi Banat obtained his BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering at the University of Jordan in 1988 and 1991, respectively. In 1995, he obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering working in the area of membrane distillation applied to desalination and removal volatile organic compounds from water. He then moved on to teaching and research at different universities. In 2003 he was promoted to Professor at the Jordan University and Science and Technology (JUST). Currently, he works as a professor of chemical engineering at The Petroleum Institute. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 publications in refereed journals, among them 3 book chapters. In addition, he has served as the Dean of research at JUST University in Jordan and as the Dean of graduate studies and acting Dean of Natural Resources Engineering at the German-Jordanian University. Prof. Banat’s research contributions have been recognized by a number of prestigious awards for young investigators, namely, Shoman’sAward for Young Arab Researchers, Hijjawi’s Awards for Applied research, and the award of exceptional researcher from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Jordan. In recognition of his international research reputation, Prof. Banat was listed among the leading scientists in the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC).

Research Interest

Prof. Banat’s research interests focus on fundamentals of multicomponent mass transfer, membrane separations applied to desalination and wastewater treatment, renewable energy and gas treatment.
