Biography

Dr. Peter L Elkin has served as a tenured Professor of Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In this capacity, he was the Center Director of Biomedical Informatics, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Vice-President of Mount Sinai hospital for Biomedical and Translational Informatics. Dr. Elkin has published over 120 peer reviewed publications. He received his Bachelors of Science from Union College and his MD from New York Medical College. He did his Internal Medicine residency at the Lahey Clinic and his NIH/NLM sponsored fellowship in Medical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Elkin has been working in Biomedical Informatics since 1981 and has been actively researching health data representation since 1987. He is the primary author of the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) national standard on Quality Indicators for Controlled Health Vocabularies ASTM E2087, which has also been approved by ISO TC 215 as a Technical Specification (TS17117). He has chaired Health and Human Service’s HITSP Technical Committee on Population Health. Dr. Elkin served as the co-chair of the AHIC Transition Planning Group. Dr. Elkin is a Master of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. Dr. Elkin chairs the International Medical Informatics Associations Working Group on Human Factors Engineering for Health Informatics. He was awarded the Mayo Department of Medicine’s Laureate Award for 2005. Dr. Elkin is the index recipient of the Homer R Warner award for outstanding contribution to the field of Medical Informatics.

Research Interest

His research interests are the application of computer science and mathematics to biology and health. He design, implement and apply modern Ontologies in support of the biological sciences. His laboratory has compiled a genomic data analysis pipeline and they have built accurate natural language processing services. These services have abstracted phenotypes from clinical records and reports, facts from the literature in support of marker discovery and assertional knowledge from text based databases.

Biography

Ramon Cacabelos is Professor and Chairman at the EuroEspes, Chair of Biotechnology and Genomics Camilo José Cela University Madrid Spain and President of the EuroEspes Biomedical Research Center Institute for CNS Disorders Corunna Spain. He earned his MD at Oviedo University Medical School Oviedo Spain and his PhD at Osaka University Medical School Osaka Japan where he has been working for almost a decade at the Department of Psychiatry. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers and 17 books. He has been teaching in 4 different universities in Spain and abroad for 20 years. He serves as President of the Spanish Society of Genomic Medicine and is the current Founder President of the World Association of Genomic Medicine. He served as a reviewer in more than 20 peer reviewed journals in the areas of neuroscience psychopharmacology drug development genomics and pharmacogenomics. He organized several International Conferences over the past 10 years. He is the Editor-in-Chief of The EuroEspes Journal GenT; Genomic Medicine Pharmacogenomics and Health Biotechnology. He has received several national and international Awards.

Biography

Francesco Marotta has completed his MD degree in 1981 and Specialized in Gastroenterology Endoscopy in 1986 with highest marks. Fellow in gastroenterology at University of Chicago in 1982 Clinical Research. Registrar in gastroenterology at the GIT Dept Groote Schuur Hospital University of CapeTown South Africa. Selected by bilateral Ministries of Health for a japanesespoken PhD course in Japan at the Dept of Surgery Hirosaki University completed in 1990. Granted a Fellowship by the Japanese Ministry of Science at the National Cancer Center Tokyo. Molecular biology stage at WelcomeBeecham Labs of London UK in 1993 and at GoodGene Lab in Korea in 2006. Research Professor at Dept of Nutrition Food Science Texas University USA. Visiting professor for gastroenterology oxidative stress aging and nutragenomics at major asian universities. For 10 years had directed a research center in Japan and cooperates with Nobel Prize Prof Luc Montagnier Editor and board member of several medical journals. Has received several international prizes the last being the Genomic Pioneer Award 2009. Has coedited a successful book on agingintervention “Il Manifesto della Lunga Vita” “the manifesto of long life”. Cofounder of the research group ReGenera which is working on an innovative model of preventive/regenerative medicine. He has published about 100 papers and presented almost 400 communications.
