  • Emphysema

Emphysema is a lung disease, in which patients have difficulty in blowing air out. It mainly occurs due to smoking, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, second hand smoking, air pollution, etc. It is said to be obstructive because patients while exhaling out, find some obstruction in giving out air. The statistical reports suggest that one out of 3 people are getting affected by this disease in Finland. Cigarette smoking is very usual here. Once innate respiratory defenses of the lung’s epithelial cell barrier and mucociliary transport system are infiltrated by foreign/invading antigens the responding inflammatory immune cells transport the antigens to the bronchial associated lymphatic tissue. It is here where the majority of the release of neutrophilic chemotactic factors is thought to occur. Proteolytic enzymes like matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) are mainly released by macrophages, which lead to destruction of the lung’s epithelial barrier. This can be treated by various drugs and therapies. The drugs used in this include bronchodilators, Inhaled steroids and Antibiotics. The therapies include pulmonary rehabilitation, nutrition therapy, supplemental oxygen, surgery, etc. There have been various researches going on. The British lung Foundation provides funding to researchers to investigate how to protect lungs. Smoking research is also an updated topic which has been started being studied in the country
