Glaucoma is an eye disease leads to damage of the optic nerve and eventually to loss of vision. Intraocular pressure is one of the risk factor for the development of glaucoma in an individual.
Glaucoma is of two types: Open angle and closed angle. Open angle develops slowly and shows no symptoms until disease is developed whereas closed angle is chronic and occurs suddenly. Symptoms include loss of vision if left untreated, damage to optic nerve, pain in eye, vision narrowing, halos formation around lights.
Treatment and Statistics
Glaucoma is primarily diagnosed for intraocular pressure by tonometry and based upon it, treatment includes prescription of eye drops, laser surgery and micro surgery. In Finland about 47% were accounted for glaucoma for age group between 30-50 years of age.
