A muscle cramp is also known as charley horse. It is a strong, painful contraction of legs or that comes on suddenly and lasts from a few seconds. It often occurs in the legs. The causes of muscle cramps are because of decreased amounts of minerals like calcium and magnesium, especially in the later months of pregnancy and Exposure to cold temperatures. Quinine is very effective in preventing muscle cramps.
The patient group showed a significantly higher incidence of muscle cramps in the last year than the general population group, 67% and 53%, respectively (p < 0.001). The incidence of calf cramps was significantly higher in the patient group than in the general population group, 91% and 75%, respectively (p < 0.001). Although most subjects reported symptoms occurring only at night, the incidence was significantly higher in the patient group than in the general population group, 78% and 52%, respectively (p < 0.001).
