Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common type of breast cancer after invasive ductal carcinoma. It refers to cancer that has broken through the wall of the lobule and begun to invade the tissues of the breast. Usually, you have surgery to remove the area of cancer and a surrounding area of healthy tissue. Sometimes it’s found in more than one area within the breast. In that case, it may not be possible to remove just the area of the cancer.
Nearly 1.7 million new breast cancer cases were diagnosed in 2012. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and men worldwide. In 2012, it represented about 12 percent of all new cancer cases and 25 percent of all cancers in women. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 countries worldwide. Globally, breast cancer now represents one in four of all cancers in women. In more developed countries, there were 3.2 million women.
