Subtle focal cortical dysplasias are often the culprit of "non lesional" intractable epilepsy. For these cases the ability to delineate and fully resect the entire dysplastic cortex is the most powerful predictor of good surgical outcome. Merging traditional techniques such as ECoG and modern neuroimaging modalities such as 7 Tesla MRI can complement each other in this endeavor and spare the need for more invasive recordings with chronically implanted subdural electrodes. Optimizing image quality is essential for the identification of focal FCDs. One approach to improving the signal-to-noise ratio is to use of phased array surface coils with larger arrays. Another approach is to employ higher field strength magnets, including 3T and now 7T MRI machines
A journal is a periodical publication intended to further progress of science, usually by reporting new research. Most journals are highly specialized, although some of the oldest journals publish articles, reviews, editorials, short communications, letters, and scientific papers across a wide range of scientific fields. Journals contain articles that peer reviewed, in an attempt to ensure that articles meet the journal's standards of quality, and scientific validity. Each such journal article becomes part of the permanent scientific record.
