  • Umbilical Hernia

     Pathophysiology

Most umbilical hernias are recognised shortly after birth, after the cord sloughs and the umbilicus heals. They are rarely symptomatic. The umbilical ring continues to close over time and the umbilical fascia strengthens, resulting in spontaneous resolution of the defect in most children.

  • Umbilical Hernia

     Disease statistics

It is very rare for the hernia to recur - less than 1 in 100. This is more common in children who have a wound infection after the operation or who do not avoid any excess physical activity for the first four to six weeks.

  • Umbilical Hernia

     Disease treatment

During surgery, a small incision is made at the base of the bellybutton. The herniated tissue is returned to the abdominal cavity, and the opening in the abdominal wall is stitched closed. In adults, surgeons often use mesh to help strengthen the abdominal wall.

  • Umbilical Hernia

     Major research

The Advanced Fetal Care Center team has extensive experience treating congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDH), through the procedures called EXIT to ECMO ECMO (extra corporeal membranous oxygenation) to treat this condition.
