Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is a cancer that starts in the stomach. To understand stomach cancer, it helps to know about the normal structure and function of the stomach. Lymphomas and mesenchymal tumors may also develop within the stomach. Most of the time, stomach cancerdevelops through a number of stages over a number of years. Nitrates and nitrites in cured meats can be converted by certain bacteria, including H. pylori, into compounds that have been found to cause stomach cancer in animals.
Diagnosis is usually by biopsy done during endoscopy. This is then followed by medical imaging to determine if the disease has spread to other parts of the body. Surgery remains the only curative therapy for stomach cancer. The pathologic examination of the resected specimen shows incomplete resection or deep invasion by tumor, the patient would need a formal stomach resection.
Among the 106 participating centers, 15 did not use ICP monitoring at all. The remaining 91 had used 3293 ICP devices during the year 2001; 146 were used in tumor cases, 2009 in TBI, and 1138 in stomach cancer. Twenty-two percent of TBI cases admitted to centers with ICP equipment were monitored. Restricting this analysis to severe cases, 47% of TBI with a GCS <8 had ICP.
