Pathophysiology
Ulnar wrist pain is common in a patient who has sustained a twisting injury or a fall on an outstretched hand. This is usually due to a tear of a ligamentous structure called the “triangular fibrocartiligeneous complex”, which stabilises the wrist joint. Patients with this problem can experience pain in their wrists associated with instability and diminished grip strength.
Disease statistics
In Italy, about three in 100 men and five in 100 women experience in their lifetime. Although ulnar wrist pain becomes more common with age, it can affect people of all ages. It is more common in women than men.
Disease treatment
The treatment of ulnar-sided wrist pain depends on the diagnosis. It can include some combination of activity modification, splinting or casting, hand therapy, anti-inflammatory medicine and/or steroid injections. If non-operative treatment does not relieve symptoms, surgery might be considered.
